Summary:

Named the Spechty Kopf Member of the Catskill Formation for Spechty Kopf hill in Lykens quadrangle, Dauphin Co., PA. Maximum thickness is about 2400 feet. The lower 500 feet consists of chiefly gray and gray-green sandstone, shale, and fine to coarse quartz-pebble conglomerate with a few intercalated thin red beds. Upper 1900 feet consists of nearly equal amounts of gray and olive-gray sandstone and fine conglomerate, and red beds. Overlies the main red beds of the Catskill Formation and underlies the Beckville Member of the Pocono Formation. The Spechty Kopf is of Late Devonian and Early Mississippian age.

Summary:

The Spechty Kopf Member is reassigned to the Pocono Formation in PA. Unit makes up the lower 200 feet of the formation. Consists of sandstone with some conglomerate and minor red bed and siltstone interbeds. Minor red beds show that member is transitional between Catskill Formation below and overlying Pocono Formation.

Summary:

The Spechty Kopf is raised to formation rank because rocks of this unit are dissimilar to the underlying Catskill Formation and overlying Pocono Formation, and the unit is clearly separated from the Catskill by an unconformity and may be separated from the Pocono by an unconformity. Consists of 548 feet of polymictic diamictic, pebbly mudstone, orthoquartzite, sandstone, and siltstone. The Spechty Kopf Formation is of Late Devonian and Early Mississippian age.
