Named for Putnam Hill, Muskingum Co., eastern OH. Consists of blue limestone in the midst of coal measures. Thickness is 4 ft. Underlain by 6 ft of black bituminous shale with thin layers of coal; overlain by 25 ft shale and fissile sandstone. Located 78 ft above Maxville limestone. [Age is Pennsylvanian.]

Putnam Hill Limestone Member of Allegheny Formation in OH correlates with formally named Kilgore Flint Member of Breathitt Formation in northeastern KY (formerly known as Kilgore flint of Webb, 1963). Also correlates with Flint Ridge flint of Morse (1931) in KY, and with Kanawha black flint of Wanless (1939, 1975).

Putnam Hill Limestone Member is in lower part of Allegheny Formation above coal erroneously called Brookville coal or Newland coal. Present only in OH. Correlates with unranked informal McArthur limestone in southern OH, Kilgore Flint Member of Breathitt Formation in KY, and unranked informal Kanawha black flint in WV.
