Purcell series [= Belt series of US (Wilmarth, 1938, US geologic names lexicon, USGS Bull. 896, p. 1746)] of late Precambrian age deposited in large, subsiding, fresh- to brackish-water-filled basin. Is equivalent to the Belt terrain of ID and MT. Quartzites of the Purcell decrease in grain size from west to east, suggesting a source terrain to the west. Purcell sediments were folded prior to deposition of overlying Windermere series. Two mapped units of the Purcell are the Dutch Creek formation and the overlying named Mount Nelson formation (new names). Purcell of this area is only the upper Purcell of other areas.

Also called Purcell System. Is equivalent to the Precambrian Belt Supergroup of U.S. See figures for correlation of Purcell with formations of Belt. Stratigraphic position and correlation of formations of this Precambrian unit with other Precambrian formations of the Belt Supergroup of the U.S. in the Northern Rocky Mountain region shown on figures 4, 5, 7, and 13.
