Summary:

Named as upper of 2 major tongues of nonmarine Chandler formation (new) of Nanushuk group. Type locality designated as Niakogon Buttes between Chandler and Anaktuvuk Rivers, Northern Foothills, northern AK. Persistent conglomerate bed, with greater percentage of white quartz pebbles than in other conglomerates, forms upper bed of tongue. Thickness in southern part of outcrop area is about 1700 ft; wedges out northward. Locally unconformably underlies nonmarine Prince Creek formation (new) of Colville group. Intertongues with and overlies Topagoruk member (new) of Umiat formation (new) of Nanushuk group. Chart gives age as Early(?) Cretaceous.

Summary:

Named for Niakogon Buttes, but type locality redesignated as exposures on northeast bank of Killik River, 10 mi upstream from its confluence with Colville River, 68 deg 58'N, 153 deg 33'W, northern AK, which is location of measured type section. Separated everywhere from Killik tongue (new) (formerly Hatbox tongue) of Chandler formation by at least thin section of marine Ninuluk formation (new) (formerly part of Topagoruk member of Umiat formation). Entire tongue grades northeastward into Ninuluk formation. Lithologically similar to Killik tongue [sandstones] of "salt-and-pepper" type. Upper part of tongue contains yellow-red highly iron-stained sandstone, thin stringers of conglomerate and bentonite. Siltstone, silt shale and clay shale constitute 50% of tongue. Age referred to as early Late Cretaceous.
