Named as a member of Norton formation. Named for McClure River, Dickinson Co., southwestern VA. Consists of coarse sandstone; sparingly conglomeratic on Pine Mountain. Thickness is 50 to 200 ft. Found in middle of Norton formation, just below Kennedy coal. Age is Pennsylvanian.

McClure Sandstone Member is in lower part of Norton Formation in VA and is top member of New River Formation in WV and, in places, VA.
