Macks Formation named near Benson, NC. Described as silty, very fine sand that is relatively uniform. Thickness in type section (borehole) about 32 ft. Overlies Cretaceous strata. Underlies Pinehurst formation. Unit is late Miocene.

Macks Formation holds key position for dating some events in upper Coastal Plain. Type section is designated at Neuse-Cape Fear Divide and NC Rte 50, Johnston Co., NC. Unit composed of sandy clay loam, purple clay beds, and gravel. Underlies Pinehurst Formation (late Miocene to early Pleistocene) and overlies unnamed Eocene(?) and Tuscaloosa Formation (Late Cretaceous). Age of Macks is late Miocene.
