Summary:

Named derived from Lion Spring in Lion Spring 7.5' quad, northern Goshute Mountains. Type section designated as 85-m-thick limestone to silty limestone sequence exposed one km west of Morgan Pass, sec.21 T32N R68E, Morgan Pass 7.5' quad at junction of Toano Range and Goshute Mountains, Elko Co, NV. Forms basal unit of tripartite cliff-forming section. Equivalent to unit C of Day and others (1987), mappable unit exposed over several sq km and believed to underlie much greater area. Is generally massive and forms bold, light- to medium-gray cliff. Overlies Shafter Formation (new). Underlies Ola Sandstone (new). Contains elements of CREPICEPHALUS Assemblage Zone. Underlying Shafter Formation contains CEDARIA Assemblage Zone fauna in its upper beds; thus Lion Spring Limestone is considered to be early Late Cambrian in age.
