Lawrence described as a bed of clay, 0 to 8 ft thick, in Allegheny formation. Underlies Lawrence coal in southeastern OH. Lies 0 to 3 ft below Lower Kittanning clay.

Lawrence underclay assigned as member of Lawrence-Lower Kittanning cyclothem in Athens Co. At most places, combined with Lower Kittanning underclay. In Allegheny series.
