Summary:

Reassigned as the basal (of 3 members) member of Pinicon Ridge Formation (new) of Wapsipinicon Group (rank raised). Recognized in northern and east-central IA on the Iowa shelf and in adjacent northern IL on the Wisconsin arch. Ranges between 4.5 to 8 m thick. Generally thicker in IA. Maximum thickness is 13 m in southeast IA. Overlies Spillville Formation of Wapsipinicon Group in northern IA; overlies Cedar Rapids Member, upper member of Otis Formation of Wapsipinicon Group in east-central IA. Dominated by thin-bedded, nonfossiliferous, argillaceous to shaly dolomite and dolomitic limestone with scattered to abundant quartz/chert silt and sand. Locally brecciated to intraclastic. Of Middle Devonian, late Eifelian and early Givetian age. Nomenclature charts. Graphic sections.
