Kahele Member of Hilina Formation. Stratigraphic column shows unit to be 2nd oldest member of Hilina Formation on south flank of Kilauea Volcano, Island of Hawaii. Underlies Pohakaa Member (new); overlies Halape Member (new). Age is shown as midway between 70,000(?) and 50,000(?) yr B.P. [Pleistocene].

Pyroclastic unit named by Easton and Garcia (1980) is 2nd oldest member (of 4) of Hilina Formation. Covers area of approx. 1000 sq km. Consists of 10- to 125-cm-thick deposit of crudely bedded red clay containing some palagonite and, in one exposure, layer of glassy vesicular scoria and glass fragments. Underlies Pohakaa Member; overlies Halape Member, although separated from other members by major sequences of lava flows. Age is estimated at 60,000(?) yr B.P.
