Thickness 1,203 feet (366.7 m) at type section, 999 feet (304.5 m) at Steamboat Pass-Lava Dam section, and 1,340 feet (408.4 m) at Lawson Cove section. Is basal member of the Notch Peak Formation. Underlies Red Tops Member (new); overlies Sneakover Member of Orr Formation. Age equivalent of parts of Chokecherry Dolomite of Deep Creek Range, Dugway Ridge Dolomite of Dugway Range, and Ajax Dolomite of Sheeprock and East Tintic Mountains. Fossils [listed]. Contains faunas of trilobite zones (ascending) TAENICEPHALUS (upper subzone), IDAHOIA (IDAHOIA LIRAE to ELLIPSOCEPHALOIDES subzone), and SAUKIA (SAUKIELLA PYRENE subzone). Upper part of member contains faunas of conodont zones (ascending) PROCONODONTUS TENUISERRATUS and PROCONODONTUS (PROCONODONTUS POSTEROCOSTATUS subzone). Age is Late Cambrian (late Croixan; late Franconian to early(?) Trempeauleauan); [bdry. btw. Franconian and Trempeauleauan uncertain].

Upper boundary raised to include 44 feet of dominantly gray lime mudstone to wackestone and grainstone, previously assigned to overlying Red Tops Member (see Hintze and others, 1988, p. 25, Steamboat Pass-Lava Dam section, Red Tops bed 27). Top part of the Hellnmaria (revised) contains fauna of the PROCONODONTUS MUELLERI conodont zone and SAUKIA trilobite zone (SAUKIELLA JUNIA subzone). Age is considered Late Cambrian (late Millardan, Sunwaptan), following Cambrian classification of Palmer, 1998 (Canadian Jour. Earth Sci., v. 35, p. 323-328).
