Summary:

Named for extinct Haupu Volcano and Haupu (Hoary Head) Ridge near Lihue, Island of Kauai, HI. Composed of extracaldera or lower member of thin-bedded olivine basalt and caldera-filling upper member of massive basalt. Upper and lower members separated by fault scarp and talus breccia. Is separated from overlying Quaternary Koloa volcanic series by great erosional unconformity and from underlying Waimea volcanic series by zone of weathering. Assigned Tertiary age on map but Pliocene and older age on stratigraphic correlation chart (p.23).

Summary:

Haupu volcanic series of Stearns (1946) reduced in rank and renamed Haupu Formation of Waimea Canyon volcanic series. [Restricted to] "rocks that accumulated in summit calders on SE slope of shield", Island of Kauai. Extra-caldera rocks of Stearns (1946) included in Napali Formation of Waimea Canyon volcanic series on generalized geologic map. Haupu formation is approximately coeval with Olokele formation (new) and later than most of Napali formation (new). Assigned Pliocene(?) age.

Summary:

Haupu volcanic series of Stearns (1946) here formally renamed Haupu Formation for Haupu peak (Hoary Head). Is unit of Waimea Canyon volcanic series. Is restricted to rocks occupying small filled caldera in Haupu ridge on southeastern part of Island of Kauai. Type locality is southern side of Haupu ridge between Haupu peak and point 0.3 mi east of Kamaulele peak [21 deg 55' 41"N, 159 deg 24' 15"W, Lihue 7.5' quad]. Consists of thick flows of olivine basalt and picrite basalt. Is as thick as 1850 ft on north side of peak. Base not exposed. Is surrounded by lavas of Napali formation and is separated from them by "buried caldera walls". On north side underlies apron of Quaternary alluvium. Believed to be contemporaneous in age with upper portion of Napali formation; therefore is probably Pliocene(?) age. Stratigraphic chart has Pliocene age.

Summary:

Haupu Formation (Macdonald, Davis and Cox, 1960) is reduced in rank and renamed Haupu Member of Waimea Canyon Basalt. Is thought to be coeval with Olokele Member of Waimea Canyon Basalt. Is assigned Pliocene age.
