Named for Gothards Creek, Douglas Co., northwestern GA. Consists of highly sheared and schistose, light-gray, biotite granitic gneiss. Thickness is undetermined because it is completely bounded by faults of Oak Mountain fault zone on northern side of northeastern end of Austell-Frolona anticlinorium. Outcrop width at type section is about 1.7 km (about 1 mi), but ranges from less than 100 m to over 4 km elsewhere in fault slices in Atlanta 1:100,000 quad. Age is Middle Proterozoic(?) to Early Silurian(?); oldest basement in region is possibly Middle Proterozoic and Gothards Creek Gneiss is intruded by Early Silurian Austell Gneiss. Report includes geologic map and correlation chart.
