Summary:

Named the Doylesburg member of the Shippensburg formation in south-central PA for Doylesburg in Path Valley, Franklin Co., PA. Consists of massive-bedded, white-weathering, dove calcilutite with dark gray, fine-grained, platy limestone at top. In western belts, two locally intertonguing lithofacies recognized: calcilutite facies and platy limestone facies with heavy interbeds of medium-gray to dove limestone conglomerate. Facies variations distributed in northeast-trending belts. Thickness is 6 to 40 feet. Conformably overlies Fannettsburg member and disconformably underlies Mercersburg formation. The Doylesburg is of Middle Ordovician age.
