Summary:

Named as upper of three formations of Veredas group (new) of Missouri series for Council Spring, near top of Oscura Mountains, 5 mi south of north end of the mountains. Type locality is section measured on northwest side Oscura Mountains, on west slope of range, eastern part SE1/4 sec 36, T5S, R5E, Socorro Co, NM in Orogrande basin. Overlies Adobe formation (new) of Veredas; underlies Burrego formation of Hansonburg group (both new). Composed of light-gray to white limestone, coarsely crystalline to fine-grained, and massive to massively bedded. Generally, weathered faces of cliffs show a tendency to break into vertical columns, but the formation breaks into thick, massive beds on weathered cliffs in a few localities. Is most distinctive unit of Veredas group--forms prominent cliffs on many of the mountain slopes of central NM. Is 18 ft thick at type; 2 mi south of type the entire limestone is exposed, and is slightly more than 18 ft thick. Fossil collecting difficult due to massive nature of rock. Only locality from which collections of fusulinids have been obtained is Cadronito Hill (genus TRITICITES). Is of Pennsylvanian (Missouri) age.
