Summary:

Named as lowest of three formations of Veredas group (new) of Missouri series for old station of Coane on east side of Oscura Mountains, NM. Type locality is section measured on northwest side Oscura Mountains, on west slope of range, eastern part SE1/4 sec 36, T5S, R5E, Socorro Co, NM in Orogrande basin. Very distinctive faunally and lithologically. At type is about 58 ft thick [shown on measured section as 59 ft thick] and composed of light-bluish-gray to gray, cherty limestone. However, in other areas of central NM, lower part of formation contains clastic beds of gray shales and sandstones. Overlies Des Moines series rocks of Bolander group (new); underlies Adobe formation (new) of Veredas possibly unconformably. In Ladron Mountains is more than 100 ft thick; in Robledo Mountains of Dona Ana Co, is less than 50 ft thick. Lowest stratigraphic occurrence of fusulinids in Coane is about 12 ft above base at type--fusulinids here are primitive forms of TRITICITES. Fusulinids are extremely abundant from about 28 ft above base to top. However, specimens of only one species have been found among numerous thin sections prepared of collections from that part of section. This form is referred with question to genus WAERINGELLA Thompson, which is very similar to WAERINGELLA? ULTIMATA (Newell and Keroher) described from Swope limestone of lower Missouri series of KS and MO. Is of Pennsylvanian (Missouri) age.
