Summary:

Cassville Shale Member formerly at base of Washington Formation above Waynesburg coal. Now assigned lower member of Waynesburg Formation at or near base of Dunkard Group. Contains flora of Zone 12 of Read and Mamay (1964). Age is Late Pennsylvanian or Early Permian based on Englund and others (1979, American Geological Institute Selected Guidebook Series No. 1).
