Buffalo Creek limestone in Kanawha formation is a hard, brittle, bluish gray, marine, fossiliferous limestone, 0 to 15 in. thick. Separated from overlying Buffalo Creek coal by 35 to 80 ft of fire clay and shale. Underlain by Upper Winifrede sandstone.

Name Buffalo Creek limestone herein abandoned. This marine limestone and shale in Kanawha Formation, Mingo Co., WV, is equivalent to the Winifrede Shale Member of Kanawha Formation of Blake and others (1994).
