Pg. 26, 27, 30, 36, 49 [of advance copy]. Albion stage (also Albion group). The need of a distinct formational name for upper Medina having become apparent in preparation of Niagara folio in course of publication by the USGS, Dr. J.M. Clarke has cooperated by suggesting Albion [footnote on p. 625]. The formation rests on lower Medina or Queenston.

In USGS. Niagara folio (No. 190), a small part of which was completed August 17, 1913, the rocks between Queenston shale and Clinton formation were designated Albion sandstone, of which Whirlpool sandstone of Grabau constituted basal member, the top beds ("Grey band" of early reports) being named Thorold sandstone member, the intervening beds consisting of red sandstone and red and gray shales. Some geologists, however, have advocated abandoning Albion and restricting Medina to this upper part of original Medina. Others have recommended the use of Cataract formation for lower 50 feet of the Albion, and restriction of Medina to the beds above the Cataract. Others have recommended using Cataract formation to include all beds included in Albion sandstone. Others have recommended restricting Albion to beds between Whirlpool sandstone and Thorold sandstone. Others have recommended restricting Albion to beds between base of the Thorold and top of Queenston shale. (See fuller explanation under Medina group, Cataract formation, Thorold sandstone member, and Whirlpool sandstone member.)

Pg. 15-26. Term Albion group, Medinan series, used in this report [Clyde and Sodus Bay quadrangles] in preference to Alexandria group. Term used to include Whirlpool sandstone, Manitoulin sandstones and shales, Cabot Head shale, and Grimsby sandstones and shales. Grimsby sandstone is oldest rock cropping out in area of report. There may be an equivalent age relationship between Albion group and Alexandria group. Overlies Richmond group.

The Albion Group is not used in NY; instead rocks of that interval are assigned to the Medina Group that consists of the Whirlpool Sandstone, Power Glen Shale, Devils Hole Sandstone (new), Grimsby Formation, Thorold Sandstone, Cambria Shale (new), and Kodak Sandstone.
