Type section, locality, area and/or origin of name:

Named from Sunflower Reservoir which lies at southern extremity of Sunflower Flat, a large open basin in southwestern corner of Rowland quadrangle, Elko Co., northern NV. Well exposed in line of hills extending eastward from Jenkins Peaks, in the southeastern corner of Mountain City quadrangle, along southern border of Rowland quadrangle. Beds dip steeply and are commonly overturned (Coash, 1967).
