Type section, locality, area and/or origin of name:

Named from exposures in bluffs south of Seven Rivers, notably bluff that lies in secs. 17 and 18 [?? 19 and 20], T. 20 S., R. 26 E., [Seven Rivers 7.5-min quadrangle], Eddy Co., southeastern NM (Meinzer and others, 1927).
Reference section (subsurface): depth-interval 1,405 to 1,970 ft, Humble Oil and Refining Company Federal Bogle No. 1 well, in sec. 30, T. 16 S., R. 30 E., Eddy Co., southeastern NM (Tait and others, 1962).
