Type section, locality, area and/or origin of name:

Type locality: around base of Elephant Butte [Lat. 33 deg. 09 min. 24 sec. N., Long. 107 deg. 11 min. 04 sec. W.] and along most of the eastern shoreline of Elephant Butte Reservoir for several mi north of the dam, [Elephant Butte 7.5-min quadrangle], Sierra Co., southwestern NM. Named from old Fort McRae, located in an eastern tributary of the Rio Grande about 3 mi north of Elephant Butte [Lat. 33 deg. 11 min. 28 sec. N., Long. 107 deg. 08 min. 38 sec. W., Elephant Butte 7.5-min quadrangle] (Kelley and Silver, 1952).
