Summary:

The Turkey Run Formation of the Culpeper Group, here named for exposures along Turkey Run, Fauquier Co., VA, consists of dark-red to greenish-gray ripple laminated, cross-bedded sandstone, siltstone, and shale occupying a belt 0.5 to 1.5 km (0.3 to 1 mi) wide and 63 km (39 mi) long in the western part of the Culpeper basin. It disconformably or paraconformably overlies the Hickory Grove Basalt and disconformably or paraconformably underlies the Sander Basalt. Thickness ranges from 150 m to 330 m (500 to 1100 ft). Palynoflora and dinosaur tracks indicate an Early Jurassic (Hettangian) age.
