Summary:

Sunflower Mountain Tuff named for Sunflower Mountain in the Sunflower Mtn. 7.5' quad, Lincoln Co, NV. Type section is designated as exposures of both upper and lower members of the formation that are exposed about 7.3 km northeast of Sunflower Mountain and 2.0 km northeast of Grapevine Spring in the Vigo NW 7.5' quad where it extends from lat. 37deg08.38'N, long. 114deg41.51'W up a cliff to lat. 37deg08.31'N, long. 114deg41.35'W. Consists of rhyolite ash-flow tuff comprising a compound cooling unit containing an upper, more-welded zone and a lower, less-welded zone. Thickness is about 200 m at type; elsewhere ranges from 100 to 190 m. Conformably overlies the Delamar Lake Tuff (new); conformably underlies the Grapevine Spring Member (new) of the Kane Wash Tuff (revised). Age is Miocene based on K-Ar (sanidine) age of 14.7 +/-0.4 Ma.
