Summary:

/Sand Bay agglomerate of Sand Bay volcanics. Name proposed for lower part of Sand Bay Volcanics; not adopted by the USGS. At Sand Bay consists of subangular to rounded boulders as much as 3 feet across in tuff matrix. Sorting is very poor but bedding is fairly well defined. Boulders are mainly of two rock types: black, glassy, highly vesicular lava and reddish vesicular porphyry. At south end of Akuyah Cliffs on west side of island thickness 1,000 feet; numerous dikes are exposed in cliffs. Similar agglomerate forms lower slopes of southern half of island. Further inland, toward cone, agglomerate contains interbedded thin lava flows and is cut by dikes. Underlies /Sand Bay lava flows (new); also underlies Great Sitkin volcanics (new). Unconformably overlies Finger Bay volcanics (new). Age is considered to be late Tertiary based on regional stratigraphic relations.
Occurs in southern part of Great Sitkin Island in central part of Aleutian Islands. [Type locality not designated. Named from Sand Bay in northeast part of Adak 1:250,000 quadrangle, Aleutian Islands, southwestern AK.]
[Use of same name for a unit and its constituents conflicts with nomenclature guidelines (CSN, 1933; ACSN, 1961, 1970; NACSN, 1983, 2005, 2021); should have been named as member with different geographic designation.]
