Summary:

Named as a member of Pierre Shale for Carter Creek in the Kremmling quad, Grand Co, CO in North Park basin. Type locality is a few mi south of Carter Creek in NW1/4 NW1/4 sec 20 and SW1/4 SW1/4 sec 17, T3N, R80W. Is a very fine-grained, thick-bedded to massive, ridge-forming sandstone. Low-angle medium-scale cross-stratified beds common. Dark-brown-weathering calcareous sandstone concretions as much as 4 ft in diameter are in uppermost beds. Ranges from 30 to 65 ft thick. Lower contact chosen at place where sandstone predominates over silty shale; upper contact placed at top of a layer of ellipsoidal calcareous sandstone concretions. Lies in upper middle part of Pierre. Only fossil fragments found. Probably lies within the Range Zone of DIDYMOCERAS STEVENSONI of late Campanian or Late Cretaceous age.
