      <abstract>This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release updates the digital geospatial database for the southern portion of the geologic map of the western part of the Cut Bank 1 degree x 2 degrees quadrangle, northwestern Montana (Harrison and others, 1998). Attribute tables and geospatial features (points, lines, and polygons) conform to the Geologic Map Schema (USGS NCGMP, 2020) and represent the geologic map as published in the U.S. Geological Survey Geologic Investigations Series Map I-2593. Minor errors, such as mistakes in line decoration or differences between the digital data and the map image, are corrected, and missing orientation points are included in this version.

The database represents the geology for the 899,246-acre, geologically complex southwestern portion of the Cut Bank 1 degree x 2 degrees quadrangle, at a publication scale of 1:250,000. The map covers primarily Flathead, Glacier, Pondera, and Teton Counties, but also includes minor parts of Lake County.

      <purpose>The purpose of this data release is to provide Geologic Map Schema (GeMS)-compliant data for selected data from the geologic map of the western part of the Cut Bank 1 degree x 2 degrees quadrangle, northwestern Montana (Harrison and others, 1998). These data update geospatial data published as part of U.S. Geological Survey Geologic Investigations Series Map I-2593 (Harrison and others, 2002). Conversion and publication of modern GIS data for geologic maps is foundational and high priority to the USGS Mineral Resources Program (MRP) to facilitate on-going research and other activities pertaining to critical mineral deposits as well as to other geologic and geophysical mapping efforts, petrologic studies, and mineral resource assessments.</purpose>
      <supplinf>CutBank_I-2593.gdb is a composite geodataset that conforms to "GeMS (Geologic Map Schema) - A standard format for the digital publication of geologic maps," available at http://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Info/standards/GeMS/. A shapefile version of the dataset is also available. It consists of shapefiles, DBF files, and delimited text files and retains all information in the native geodatabase, but some programming will likely be necessary to assemble these components into usable formats.

The Esri file geodatabase (CutBank_I-2593.gdb) contains the following elements:

--GeologicMap: feature dataset (subdirectory) containing the following feature classes (GIS layers):

----ContactsAndFaults: line layer representing locations of contacts and faults.

----DataSourcePolys: polygon layer representing the spatial extent of data sources and (or) references used within the map boundary.

----GeologicLines: line layer representing the locations of fold axes.

----MapUnitPolys: polygon layer representing the distribution of geologic map units.

----OrientationPoints: point layer representing orientations of bedding.

--DataSources: table that lists sources and (or) references used to derive spatial features (points, lines, and polygons) and attribute information.

--DescriptionOfMapUnits: table of map unit descriptions derived from the collar of the geologic map or geologic map pamphlet. The hierarchical order of map units is coded in the HierarchyKey field.

--GeoMaterialDict: table that defines and lists lithology terms in hierarchical order used in the GeoMaterial field of the DescriptionOfMapUnits table. The standardized vocabulary is available in Appendix 1 of the GeMS documentation.

--Glossary: table that defines and lists sources of terms used in the database.

The unique values in each attribute field were reviewed and checked for spelling, consistency of terms, accuracy, adherence to established vocabularies, and completeness.     <logic>GIS layer and attribute information were cross walked into the GeMS database structure. Attribute values were modified for consistency with GeMS terminology. Topology tests were conducted on line and polygon feature classes to ensure spatial integrity of the data.</logic>
    <complete>Polygon and line features from the original GIS database (Harrison and others, 2002) were converted from ArcInfo interchange files (E00) to an Esri file geodatabase. The original data represents the southern portion of the printed map only. Point features that were not included in the ArcInfo interchange files were digitized from the I-2593 map (Harrison and others, 1998) and quality assured for completeness. Minor errors, such as mistakes in line decoration or differences between the digital data and the map image, are corrected in this version. Textual information from the original printed map 'Description of Map Units' section was transcribed into the DescriptionOfMapUnits table.</complete>

        <horizpar>Horizontal accuracy of point, line, and polygon features is dependent on the accuracy of the 1:250,000 scale source map. Computing technologies used for geospatial data capture in 2002 resulted in variable line quality and accuracy. Estimated accuracy of horizontal location, provided on a per-feature basis in the attribute field LocationConfidenceMeters in GeMS, was assigned a value of -9 indicating unknown. Base maps and (or) materials used for original data capture (as ArcInfo coverages) are no longer available.</horizpar>

        <procdesc>Harrison and others (1998) compiled the geology and published the original paper geologic map at 1:250,000 scale. The southern portion of this map was digitized and converted to ArcInfo coverages by Ken Sandau (Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology). The work was completed and published by U.S. Geological Survey and contractors at the Spokane Field Office (WA) in 2002 (Harrison and others, 2002).</procdesc>

        <procdesc>The original data were converted from ArcInfo interchange files (E00) format into feature classes within an Esri file geodatabase. Attributes were populated to conform to the Geologic Map Schema (GeMS) standard for geologic map publications (USGS NCGMP, 2020). Definitions of these values are derived from the original data (Harrison and others, 2002), GeMS (USGS NCGMP, 2020), and from the Glossary of Geology (Neuendorf and others, 2011). GeMS geodatabase feature classes and tables were populated with additional information as required. Data layers were re-projected to Universal Transverse Mercator, Zone 12, North American Datum 1927, in units of meters.

Base maps and (or) materials used for original data capture are no longer available, therefore a georeferenced version of the original map publication (Harrison and others, 1998) from the National Geologic Map Database was used to compare attribute information and to correct minor discrepancies between the GIS data and the printed map. Orientation points not included in the original dataset were captured and attributed with structural attitude information. Minor errors, such as differences in line decoration, line type, or map units were corrected.

Map unit colors were matched to the original publication as best possible and are provided as RGB values in the AreaFillRGB field of the DescriptionOfMapUnits table. Map unit colors are also provided in the custom Esri Style file. 

Geologic map symbolization was also matched to the original publication as best possible using the FGDC Digital Cartographic Standard for Geologic Map Symbolization (FGDC, 2006). These values are provided in the Symbol attribute fields and the included Esri Style file. 

Topology tests were conducted on polygon and line feature classes to ensure spatial integrity of the data. The geodatabase was confirmed to be GeMS compliant using GeMS validation tools.</procdesc>
