      <abstract>This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release provides an updated digital geospatial database for the geologic terranes of the Hailey 1 degree x 2 degrees quadrangle and the western part of the Idaho Falls 1 degree x 2 degrees quadrangle, south-central Idaho (Worl and Johnson, 2000). Attribute tables and geospatial features (lines and polygons) conform to the Geologic Map Schema (USGS NCGMP, 2020) and represent the geologic map as published in USGS Bulletin 2064-A (Worl and Johnson, 1995). Minor errors, such as mistakes in line decoration or differences between the digital data and the map image, are corrected in this version.

The database represents the geology for the 6.1 million-acre, geologically complex Hailey quadrangle and the western part of the Idaho Falls quadrangle, at a publication scale of 1:250,000. The map covers primarily Blaine, Camas, Custer and Elmore Counties, but also includes minor parts of Ada, Butte, Gooding, Lincoln, and Minidoka Counties. These GIS data supersede those in the interpretive report (Worl and Johnson, 2000).

      <purpose>The purpose of this data release is to provide a Geologic Map Schema (GeMS)-compliant version for the geologic terranes of the Hailey 1 degree x 2 degrees quadrangle and the western part of the Idaho Falls 1 degree x 2 degrees quadrangle, south-central Idaho, that updates the geospatial data published as part of U.S. Geological Survey Bulletin 2064-A (Worl and Johnson, 2000). Conversion and publication of modern GIS data for geologic maps is foundational and high priority to the USGS Mineral Resources Program (MRP) to facilitate on-going research and other activities pertaining to critical mineral deposits as well as to other geologic and geophysical mapping efforts, petrologic studies, and mineral resource assessments. The data reside in the National Geologic Map Database (NGMDB) distributed archive of standardized geoscience information for the nation.</purpose>
      <supplinf>Hailey_B2064-A.gdb is a composite geodataset that conforms to "GeMS (Geologic Map Schema) - A standard format for the digital publication of geologic maps," available at http://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Info/standards/GeMS/. A shapefile version of the dataset is also available. It consists of shapefiles, DBF files, and delimited text files and retains all information in the native geodatabase, but some programming will likely be necessary to assemble these components into usable formats.

The Esri file geodatabase (Hailey_B2064-A.gdb) contains the following elements:

--GeologicMap: feature dataset (subdirectory) containing the following feature classes (GIS layers):

----ContactsAndFaults: line layer representing locations of contacts and faults.

----DataSourcePolys: polygon layer representing the spatial extent of data sources and (or) references used within the map boundary.

----MapUnitPolys: polygon layer representing the distribution of geologic map units.

--DataSources: table that lists sources and (or) references used to derive spatial features (lines and polygons) and attribute information.

--DescriptionOfMapUnits: table of map unit descriptions derived from the collar of the geologic map or geologic map pamphlet. The hierarchical order of map units is coded in the HierarchyKey field.

--GeoMaterialDict: table that defines and lists lithology terms in hierarchical order used in the GeoMaterial field of the DescriptionOfMapUnits table. The standardized vocabulary is available in Appendix 1 of the GeMS documentation, available at https://doi.org/10.3133/tm11B10. 

--Glossary: table that defines and lists sources of terms used in the database.

    <logic>GIS layer and attribute information (ver. 1) were cross-walked into the GeMS database structure. Attribute values were modified for consistency with GeMS terminology. Contacts and faults originally compiled as separate line layers were combined into a single line layer (ContactsAndFaults). Topology tests were conducted on polygon and line feature classes to ensure spatial integrity of the data.</logic>

Computing technologies used for original data capture resulted in variable line quality and accuracy. Estimated accuracy of horizontal location, provided on a per-feature basis in the attribute field LocationConfidenceMeters in GeMS, was assigned a value of -9 indicating unknown. Base maps and/or materials used for original data capture (ArcInfo coverages) are no longer available. Registration discrepancies between the printed map and the digital data are not addressed in this version.</horizpar>

Clear film positives of the geologic map were electronically scanned to raster images; converted to vector geographic information system (GIS) layers; and attributed by the contractor Techni Graphics Systems, Inc. of Fort Collins, Colorado in 1999. G. Green (USGS) edited and published the data as ArcInfo interchange files (E00) in 2000. The files are stored in the projection - UTM zone 11, meters, NAD27, Clarke 1866.</procdesc>

        <procdesc>Version 2: The original data (Worl and Johnson, 2000) were converted from ArcInfo interchange files (E00) format into feature classes within an Esri file geodatabase. Attributes were standardized to conform to the Geologic Map Schema (GeMS) standard for geologic map publications (USGS NCGMP, 2020). Definitions of these values are derived from the source publication (Worl and Johnson, 1995), GeMS (USGS NCGMP, 2020), and from the Glossary of Geology (Neuendorf and others, 2011). GeMS geodatabase feature classes and tables were populated with additional information as required. Data layers were re-projected to Albers Equal Area, North American Datum 1983, in units of meters.

Lines representing geologic contacts and faults, originally compiled as separate layers, were combined into a single layer (ContactsAndFaults). Faults were snapped to contacts and overlaps were removed.

Base maps and (or) materials used for original data capture are no longer available, therefore a georeferenced version of the original map publication (https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_22335.htm) from the National Geologic Map Database was used to compare attribute information and to correct minor discrepancies between the GIS data and the printed map. Minor errors, such as differences in line decoration, line type, or map units were corrected and documented in the Notes attribute field. Registration discrepancies between the printed map and the digital data are not addressed in this version.

Map unit colors were matched to the original publication as best possible and are provided as RGB values in the AreaFillRGB field of the DescriptionOfMapUnits table. Map unit colors are also provided in the custom Esri Style file.
