Message sent by Dave Soller to meeting participants, Nov. 18, 1996. **************************************************************************** Summary of meeting of standards working groups in support of the National Geologic Map Database, GSA Annual Meeting, Denver, 10/29/96: The meeting was conducted from 7 to 10 pm. 24 persons from the USGS, 8 state geological surveys, and the Geological Survey of Canada attended (see attached list). The first hour concentrated on a presentation and discussion of the fiscal year 1997 (Oct. 96 - Sept. 97) plan for the National Geologic Map Database project. It was recommended that the project chief (Dave Soller, USGS) develop a Web site to contain the project plan and general information and to serve as a location for information on the standards working groups. Further, it was recommended that the development of certain standards (notably the data model and the cartographic standards) be officially recognized through the Federal Geographic Data Committee's formal standards application process. This application will be made by Dave Soller through the FGDC Geologic Data Subcommittee. Next, each standards working group held an informal meeting, until 9:30pm, followed by concluding remarks from each group: 1) Working Group on guidelines for digital map publications -- Todd Fitzgibbon noted that within the month he will e-mail to his group a strawman set of guidelines for discussion. 2) Working Group on spatial accuracy -- Dick Berg will contact participants in this group, as members were not able to attend this meeting. 3) Working Group on geologic data model -- Gary Raines noted that the preliminary document on the data model will be ready for public comment in December, in PDF format. A meeting, with selected guests, will be scheduled for Jan/Feb to discuss comments on the model. Regarding planning for the Penrose Conference in mid-1997, Dave Soller was asked to write and submit the GSA proposal. 4) Working Group on data capture techniques -- Dave Soller discussed plans for a joint USGS/AASG workshop on data capture techniques, in late winter, 97. A letter of invitation will be drafted and circulated to working group members for comment by mid-late November. ****************************************************************************** 10/29/96 meeting of participants in the standards working groups, National Geologic Map Database project: (name, organization, phone #, e-mail) Warren Anderson, Kentucky GS, 606-257-5500, wanderson@kgs.mm.uky.edu Dick Berg, Illinois GS, 217-244-2776, berg@geoserv.isgs.uiuc.edu Rick Berquist, Virginia GS, 804-221-2448, crberq@facstaff.wm.edu Boyan Brodaric, GS of Canada, 613-992-3562, brodaric@gsc.emr.ca Jim Cobb, Kentucky GS, 606-257-5500, cobb@kgs.mm.uky.edu David Collins, Kansas GS, 913-864-3965, david@fathom.kgs.ukans.edu Steven Cordiviola, Kentucky GS, 606-257-5500, scordiviola@kgs.mm.uky.edu Alex Donatich, USGS, 303-236-5468, donatich@usgs.gov Todd Fitzgibbon, USGS, 415-329-4942, tfitz@usgs.gov Donald Hoskins, Penn.
