Type section: north end of prominent bluff, 6 mi south of Galena, in center NE/4 sec. 21, T. 27 N., R. 1 E., [approx. Lat. 42 deg. 19 min. 24 sec. N., Long. 90 deg. 24 min. 00 sec. W., Galena 15-min quadrangle, 1939 ed.], Jo Daviess Co., northwestern IL (Templeton and Willman, 1963, Illinois Geol. Survey Bull., no. 89, p. 125; Willman and Buschbach, 1975, Illinois Geol. Survey Bull., no. 95, p. 47-87).
Named from Wise Lake, a lake on Mississippi River floodplain [now submerged], near type section (Templeton and Willman, 1963, p. 125; Willman and Buschbach, 1975).
Notable exposures in Dixon-Oregon area, northern IL (Templeton and Willman, 1952).
