Type locality: in NE/4 NE/4 sec. 36, T. 16 N., R. 22 E., Cherokee Co., OK. Named from the town of Welling, near the type locality at Horseshoe Bend of the Illinois River, Cherokee Co., OK (Amsden, 1979).
Reference section (subsurface): in OGS 3 core, in SE/4 SE/4 NE/4 sec. 20, T. 13 N., R. 21 E., Sequoyah Co., OK (Amsden, 1979).
