Type locality: Cone Puu Waawaa [Lat. 19 deg. 47 min. 55 sec. N., Long. 155 deg. 53 min. 01 sec. W., Puu Anahulu 7.5-min quadrangle], northern slope of Hualalai Volcano, Island of Hawaii, HI (Davis and Macdonald IN Avias, 1956).
Named from Cone Puu Waawaa (Stearns and Macdonald, 1946). [Now spelled Puʻuwaʻawaʻa (U.S. Board on Geographic Names, 2017).]
