Type section: lower units 1 and 2 in NW/4 SW/4 NW/4 sec. 15, T. 29 S., R. 4 E., and upper units 3 and 4 in SE/4 SE/4 NE/4 sec. 16, T. 29 S., R. 4 E., Dona Ana Co., NM. Named from small community of Smeltertown across Rio Grande, east of Cerro de Cristo Rey (Strain, 1976).
