Type section, locality, area and/or origin of name:

Type locality: caps small mesa in E/2 NW/4 sec. 35, T. 32 N., R. 35 E., Cimarron Valley, Union Co., northeastern NM. Named from Sheep Pen Canyon which joins the Cimarron Valley about 0.5 mi northwest of type locality (Parker, 1933).
Type section: in N/2 SW/4 NE/4 sec. 35, T. 32 N., R. 35 E., Union Co., northeastern NM (Lucas and others, 1987).
