Type section: shale pit of Midland Brick and Tile Company on Shale Hill, near Utica, in NE/4 SE/4 sec. 18, T. 57 N., R. 24 W., southwestern Livingston Co., MO. Named from Shale Hill (Howe, 1982; Gentile and Thompson, 2004).
