Type locality: on south slope of Castle Rock, at junction of the East Fork (of Mill Creek) with Mill Creek, [near center of] sec. 13, T. 6 S., R. 9 E., [approx. Lat. 45 deg. 19 min. 00 sec. N., Long. 110 deg. 33 min. 55 sec. W., Knowles Peak 7.5-min quadrangle, Gallatin National Forest], Park Co., MT. Named from Sage Creek which enters East Fork of Mill Creek 1.5 mi upstream from type locality (Lochman, 1950).
