Type section: exposures in the valley of the Rio Canas extending from its mouth to the Quebrada la Yegua fault (Puerto Rico Meter Grid System 172,985 E.; 55,680 N. to 172,425 E.; 55,470 N.), Naranjito quadrangle, Puerto Rico (Lidiak, 1965).
Named from Rio de la Plata River which flows across the rocks, Coamo-Guayama district, Puerto Rico (US geologic names lexicon, USGS Bull. 1200).
