Origin of name not stated. Forms mass of Mount Rockwell, in Two Medicine Valley, Glacier National Park, Glacier Co., northwestern MT (Fenton and Fenton, 1931).
Type locality: mountain between Red Gap and Ptarmigan Wall, Glacier National Park. Typically developed in Lewis Range, north of Many Glaciers (Fenton and Fenton, 1937).
