Type section, locality, area and/or origin of name:

Type exposure: in roadcut in SE/4 NE/4 NE/4 sec. 28, T. 10 S., R. 9 E., Riley Co., northeastern KS. Named from Pillsbury Crossing, a ford across Deep Creek, in NE/4 NW/4 sec. 5, T. 11 S., R. 9 E., Riley Co. (Moore and Mudge, 1956).
Paratype sections (sections typical of facies changes of formations): exposed in stream bank in center of SW/4 NE/4 sec. 32, T. 10 S., R. 9 E., Riley Co., and in NE/4 NE/4 sec. 19, T. 11 S., R. 13 E., Wabaunsee Co., northeastern KS (Moore and Mudge, 1956).
