Named from exposures at mouth of Picayune Gulch [now spelled Picayne], a tributary to the Animas btw. Eureka and Animas Forks, [approx. Lat. 37 deg. 54 min. 40 sec. N., Long. 107 deg. 33 min. 20 sec. W.], Silverton 15-min quadrangle (1904 ed.), San Juan Co., southwestern CO (Cross and Howe, 1905).
