Type section, locality, area and/or origin of name:

Type locality: along Piasa Creek, west of village of Piasa, in E/2 sec. 25, T. 8 N., R. 10 W., Brighton 15-min quadrangle, Jersey Co., southwestern IL (Wanless, 1956, Illinois Geol. Survey Circ., no. 217, p. 11; Kosanke and others, 1960).
Named from Piasa Creek which runs through southeast corner of Jersey Co., southwest corner of Macoupin Co., and northwest corner of Madison Co., southwestern IL (Culver, 1925).
