Type section: west flank Torreon Wash where extensively exposed; type is offset from NE/4 NW/4 NW/4 sec. 27 to SE/4 SE/4 SW/4 sec. 28, T. 21 N., R. 5 W., Deer Mesa 7.5-min quadrangle, Sandoval Co., northwestern NM. Named from nearby spring in sec. 14, T. 20 N., R. 4 W. (Williamson and Lucas, 1992).
