Named from exposures at Hawthorn, Alachua Co., FL (US geologic names lexicons, USGS Bull. 896, 1200).
[Principal reference sections:] (1) abandoned quarry located near the station of Grove Park, about 3 mi west of Hawthorn, in SW/4 NE/4 sec. 31, T. 10 S., R. 22 E., Alachua Co., FL; and (2) in bluffs along the Savannah River from Tiger Leap Bluff, Screven Co., to Old Wood Landing, central Effingham Co., GA (see Huddlestun, 1988; Scott, 1988).
