Type locality: northeast side of Oscura Mountains, in NE/4 sec. 31, T. 5 S., R. 6 E., and west-central part of sec. 32, [approx. Lat. 33 deg. 50 min. 09 sec. N., Long. 106 deg. 20 min. 56 sec. W., Garden Spring Canyon 7.5-min quadrangle], Socorro Co., central NM. Named from Del Cuerto Spring on east slope of Oscura Mountains, about 3 mi east of Oscura Peak, [in SE/4 sec. 9, T. 8 S., R. 6 E., Oscura Peak 7.5-min quadrangle, Lincoln Co., central NM] (Thompson, 1942).
