Type section, locality, area and/or origin of name:

Type section: exposures on State Road 856, 0.2 mi (0.32 km) south of State Road 622 and 0.2 mi (0.32 km) north of the VA State line, Pittsylvania Co., VA. Named from Cow Branch, a small tributary of Cascade Creek near Leakesville Junction. (Meyertons, 1963).
Reference sections (Thayer, 1970).
