Named from Chaney Salt Plain on Elm Fork of Red River, 4 mi east of TX line [in T. 6 N., R. 26 W., Bull Creek 7.5-min quadrangle], Harmon Co., southwestern OK (US geologic names lexicons, USGS Bull. 896, 1200; see Scott and Ham, 1957).
