Type locality: Caballos [Horse] Mountain, the entire north face of which is made up of white Caballos novaculite, Brewster Co., Marathon region, west-central TX. Named from Horse (Caballos) Mountain, Brewster Co., west-central TX (Udden and others, 1916; Baker and Bowman, 1917).
