Type section, locality, area and/or origin of name:

Blue Sphinx monolith, south of Golden Pen Mine, in sec. 33, T. 11 N., R. 32 E., east flank of Gabbs Valley Range, Mineral Co., NV (Ekren and others, 1980).
Because base is poorly exposed, reference locality is designated just north of Nugent Wash, in sec. 18, T. 11 N., R. 32 E. (Ekren and others, 1980).
