Type section: measured on south-facing slope, on northwest side of recreation area [at Ririe Reservoir, in SW/4 NW/4 sec. 16, T. 2 N., R. 40 E., approx. Lat. 43 deg. 30 min. 18 sec. N., Long. 111 deg. 45 min. 48 sec. W.], southeastern corner Rigby SE 7.5-min quadrangle, Bonneville Co., eastern Snake River Plain (southern margin), eastern ID (Morgan and McIntosh, 2005, Loc. 21).
Reference section: measured at southern tip of Lemhi Range, on west-facing slope north of ID State Highway 33, [in central W/2 sec. 35, T. 6 N., R. 30 E., Lat. 43 deg. 48 min. 17.58 sec. N., Long. 112 deg. 50 min. 51 sec. W.], Big Lost River Sinks 7.5-min quadrangle, Butte Co., eastern Snake River Plain (northern margin), eastern ID (Morgan and McIntosh, 2005, Loc. 20).
Named from Blacktail Creek, south of type section, [in T. 2 N., R. 40 E., northeastern Ozone 7.5-min quadrangle, Bonneville Co., eastern ID] (Morgan and McIntosh, 2005).
