Named from town of Bishop. Exposed in area southeast of Mono Lake CA (Gilbert, 1938).
Type locality (Gilbert's section): in Owens River Gorge, in sec. 22, T. 5 S., R. 31 E., north boundary of Mount Tom 15-min quadrangle, Mono Co., CA (Bateman, 1965).
